TWO CHALLENGES FOR SOUTH AFRICAN RADIO AMATEURS
Well, actually two challenges, the one about the Worked All ZS and the other about the 10
MHz or 30-metre band.
Only two radio amateurs hold this Worked All ZS Award. According to the latest SARL VHF/UHF
SHF Distance Records, Hal, ZS6WB (in 1997) and Paul ZS6NK (in 2018) are the only holders of
the 6-metre Worked All ZS Award. It is noted that Hal, ZS6WB; Paul, ZS6NK; Chris, ZS6EZ,
and Bernie, ZS4TX, hold the All-Africa Award for 6-metres.
The first challenge – who will be number three to achieve a 6-metre Worked all ZS?
Then, the foot note to the IARU Region 1 10 MHz band plan states, “The band segment 10 120 kHz to 10 140 kHz may be used for SSB transmissions in the area of Africa south of the equator during local daylight hours.” The Australian HF band plan for 10 MHz states, “The current band plan has telephony from 10,120 to 10,135 MHz.”
Because of an FT8 frequency, it is recommended that 10,120 to 10,130 be used for phone for this challenge. NOTE: Phone QSO's on the 30m band is only permitted during daytime in South Africa.
So the second challenge - who will be the first South African amateur to make
a phone QSO with an Australian amateur on 30 metres?
Lets start calling them!
