Build a 2m (1/4 wave) Magnetic Mobile Antenna from junk

Here is a really cheap but very effective 2m quarter wave magnet mobile antenna that I constructed from junk several years ago. I think in the year 2000.  It does not look like as store bought unit but it performs as it should.  The idea is my own and therefor no other info except the photos.

I used the following items to construct the antenna:

  • 1m length of brazing rod (5mm or 3.5mm thick) or a piece of solid copper wire.
  • 2 x PL259 Connector
  • 1 x SO239 Connector
  • 1 x 40mm or 50mm PVC End Cap
  • Piece of aluminum angle iron
  • Nuts and bolts
  • 1 x old 5" floppy drive motor cover with magnet.
  • 1 x microwave Magnetron magnet.
  • RG58CU Mil-Spec coax cable
  • Piece of soft velvet material

Construction is simple as the image show you all you need to build this antenna.  The inner wire of the coax goes to the 19" Antenna whip while the braid is connected to the nut of the aluminum angle iron that is fixed to the floppy motor cover.  The magnet is just affixed to the floppy cover by its own magnetism or you can glue it in place.   SWR is 1:1 with careful trimming.  Simple and cheap project but also very effective.  Total cost then R50.00
