A visit to Gamkaskloof aka "The Hell" (29 March 2024 - 1 April 2024)

A visit to Gamkaskloof was arranged for the Easter Weekend this year. Yes, and there is no such place as "The Hell / Die Hel".  This forthcoming from the Gamkasklowers which I knew personally as I stayed in Prins Albert in the 80's.  I was privileged to meet many of the Klowers. Even hunted with them on occasion but also learned about gardening, nature and living a simple yet full life. Today they are no longer with us but I have fond memories about Gamkaskloof and the Klowers.  Another aspect that I would like to get of my chest is the fact that many books / articles were written about the Klowers which contained wrong information about the people of Gamkaskloof.  As the late Karel Cordier told me once that some writers write a book full of lies to be able to sell the book.

People believed this nonsense but I know otherwise.  I am so grateful that I had the privilege to have known them personally.

Unfortunately I could not join the "expedition" to this beautiful wilderness area of our country this past weekend as I fell ill a day before leaving.  My son, Awie and his trusted dark green Toyota Hilux 4 x 4 visited the Kloof for 4 days.  I however did receive these beautiful images and videos taken by those who were in attendance.  Having planned to activate Gamkaskloof as a POTA point fell to the wayside and was abruptly prevented by some bug that resulted in a severe fever.  Well there will also not be a next time to visit the Kloof as my son indicated that it is getting more difficult to visit the area as the road is very bad and takes more that the indicated time (2 hours) from the turn-off to the Kloof to reach your destination.  Maybe the younger generation will one day activate this beautiful POTA site.  I decided to share a few images and videos with the readers of this Blog.  I would like to thank all the photograph and video contributors, some unknown to me.
